"Billy Joel To Help Pay For Fisherman's Funeral"
By: Dave Itzkoff
(September 30th, 2008)

Billy Joel will assist with the costs of a funeral for a clam digger whose body was found not far from his Long Island home, Newsday reported. Edwin Flores, 29, a fisherman from Oyster Bay, had been reported missing since September 23rd, 2008, when he had gone clamming on a day of rough weather; on Monday Mr. Flores's body was found by a jogger on a beach in Lattingtown. Mr. Joel, who lives nearby in Centre Island, told Newsday that he had made a donation to the North Oyster Bay Baymen's Association to assist with the funeral and other expenses. "I'm not comfortable talking about the amount," Mr. Joel told Newsday. "But I've always supported our local commercial fishermen. These are the people, both men and women, who have to go out in all types of conditions to bring us our fish."
